FAQ

A mulch ground cover keeps temperatures in the soil moderate during the heat of summer and frost protection for plants in winter. Why use mulch?

Many people use mulch for a decorative ground cover but don't realize the extra benefits it provides. Mulch helps retain moisture for the plants and acts as erosion control during heavy rains. It also provides a natural weed barrier that doesn't allow sunlight in. A mulch ground cover keeps temperatures in the soil moderate during the heat of summer and frost protection for plants in winter.

The best benefit of mulch, however, is the material it provides when it eventually breaks down and enriches the soil.

When should I mulch?

Generally the best time to mulch is in the spring to get a good weed barrier down. A 2 to 3-inch top dressing is recommended, but a 3 to 4-inch layer is necessary for new areas to aid in moisture retention. A general rule is that one cubic yard covers approximately 100 square feet, 3 to 4 inches deep. See our mulch calculator page for proper estimation.

Are the dyed mulches safe to use?

Yes, the mulch is colored with nontoxic iron oxide-based dyes that are found naturally in the earth's surface. It is safe for children, plants and animals. However, under wet conditions the mulch could leave a slight stain on concrete driveways. JR’s Mulch Sales Inc. recommends you leave a tarp down for the delivery of the dyed mulches just to be safe.

What should I do if I have a fungus growing on my bark?

A harmless fungus sometimes occurs naturally due to extreme heat and humidity. Simply clear the fungus away and treat the area with a mixture of 4 parts water to 1 part bleach.

How do I set up a delivery of mulch?

The best way is to call us with a day or two’s notice. Weekends are usually busy, so having your delivery made on a weekday assures that you'll be ready for your weekend project. We deliver 7 days a week and can accommodate any delivery!

Do I need to be home for my delivery?

No, simply tell us where to dump the delivery when you call to make your order, and you can leave a check on the door for payment. If you prefer, credit card payments by phone are welcomed.

Will your delivery truck damage my driveway?

No, our trucks are small, single-axle dump trucks that are eight feet wide with a twelve-foot box; they weigh 15 - 20,000 pounds when fully loaded, which may sound like a lot but is not enough to damage a driveway

Can you always deliver right where I specify?

We will place the mulch as close as possible to your preferred location. However, overhead wires, tree branches, tight alleyways, or parked cars could prevent this. JR’s Mulch Sales Inc. is not responsible for damages to your property, and the homeowner is solely responsible for any damages to or towing of our equipment, if delivery is other than in your driveway. Our delivery trucks raise up to dump. Please make sure we have adequate clearance.

Can I split a load with my neighbor?

Absolutely. We have divided trucks and can deliver different varieties to each neighbor and help everybody get a quantity discount.
